打從一開始，神就呈現祂自己。那個體的表現，那話語，是與神同在的，也就是神，祂從一開始就和神是一起的。萬物的創造都由祂而來，沒有一樣不經過祂。祂的本質裡蘊含著生命，這個生命是我們人類的光。這光照透了黑暗；只是黑暗卻不意識到祂。

At the beginning God expressed himself. That personal expression, that word, was with God, and was God, and he existed with God from the beginning. All creation took place through him, and none took place without him. In him appeared life and this life was the light of mankind. The light still shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out.

太初有道，道與神同在，道就是神。這道太初與神同在。萬物是藉著他造的；凡被造的，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的。生命在他裡頭，這生命就是人的光。光照在黑暗裡，黑暗卻不接受光。

天地萬物還沒有被造以前，道[也就是上帝的話]已經存在了。道和上帝同在。道就是上帝。 天地萬物還沒有被造以前，道就和上帝同在了。天地萬物都是靠著他[也就是道]造的。被造的天地萬物之中，沒有一樣不是藉著他造的。他是一切生命的根源。那生命的根源給人提供了光。光在黑暗中照耀；但黑暗不認識他[，因此不接納他]。

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.
