樂觀悲觀
今天在網路上看到一則幽默和智慧的說辭：
「天下人可分成兩種：當有一串葡萄在手，一種人先挑好的吃；另一種人則把好的留到最後吃。直覺上第一種人應該是樂觀的，因為他每吃一顆都是吃剩的葡萄裡最好的；第二種人應該是悲觀的，因為他每吃一顆都是吃剩的葡萄裡較差的。不過事實卻適得其反，緣故是第二種人還有希望，第一種人只有回憶。」

Wrong Choices to Right Places誤打誤撞
昨天在臉書上看到流傳的字畫，寫的是一句智慧言語“Sometimes the Wrong Choices bring us to the Right Places.”為了這句智慧言語，我稍微做了一些思考和研究，發現有一位藝名 NayArts 的詩人藝術家Nathan T. Pyle，自稱他在2006年時創作了這幅字畫，包括這句智慧言語也是他的首創。

配得尊重
我的同學，以前自稱薛呆呆(我是他的鄰號，叫林呆呆)，現在教友們都叫他薛長老，非教友們都稱他薛博士。今天一大早，我在臉書Facebook上看到他的長達一個鐘頭的主日講道，主題是當父母、長輩的要配得子女、晚輩的尊重。他引用了聖經，以弗所書裡面的一節經文「你們作父親的，不要惹兒女的氣，只要照著主的教訓和警戒養育他們。」

Faith and Prayer
I had been told that it was necessary to believe and to pray, but I felt that my faith was weak and that I could not pray. I had been told that it was necessary to pray for faith – for that faith without which prayer is of no avail. I was told that faith comes through prayer and that prayer comes through faith, which, to say the least, was certainly bewildering. Such statements commended themselves neither to reason nor experience.
他們告訴我，我必須相信，而且要禱告，但是我感到我的信心脆弱，而且不會禱告。他們教我，我必須祈求信心─因為沒有信心的禱告是沒有果效的。他們告訴我信心來自禱告，而禱告又來自信心，這種說法，至少可以說，保證使人迷惑。這樣的陳述本身所要推薦的不是訴之理性也不是來自經驗。

Virtue 美德
關於有人作出一個獨特的正直或中肯的行為，和一位正直的翩翩君子之間是有差別的。有人不是網球高手，但偶而也會打出一個好球。一個所謂的網球高手，他的眼神，肌肉和反應都已經被訓練到毫無疑問的可以打出無以數計的好球。他們有某種的氣質或品質，甚至於他不打球的時候都可以被感受出來；正如一位數學家的心念，當他不在研算時，他的心思一直都有某種特有的習慣和觀感。同樣的，一個人堅忍不拔的持續作出正直的行為，最後會得出某種性格的品質。現在我們所謂的“美德”，就是這種品質，而非那些特出的行為。

What you mean by a good player is the man whose eye and muscles and nerves have been so trained by making innumerable good shots that they can now be relied on. They have a certain tone or quality which is there even when he is not playing, just as a mathematician's mind has a certain habit and outlook which is there even when he is not doing mathematics. In the same way a man who perseveres in doing just actions gets in the end a certain quality of character. Now it is that quality rather than the particular actions which we mean when we talk of "virtue."

流蘇
4/12早上在池上鄉農會花園裡,坤賜特別向大家介紹了一棵流蘇樹.可惜的是,我們晚去了一個星期,在樹梢上,只見到那唯一尚存的一絲絲流蘇花,還在做今年最後的展顏.每年的流蘇花開時期,我都會到台大校園,看一看她的嬌容.惟她的花期甚短,稍一閃失,可能就錯過了,得再等一年.台大校園裡有幾棵源頭母樹,樹幹上還標示了牌子,其他流蘇樹都是由這幾棵母樹擷取插枝而來,甚且聽說後來台灣許多其他地方的流蘇,也是由他們開枝散葉出去的.

阿鳥
62生日謝謝阿鳥提供的這些花草景物照片,看得出來,阿鳥還是當年那樣的灑脫自然,沒有多少改變.歲月都在我們身上留下了痕跡,還能和四十年前一樣,保有純樸的赤子之心,是多麼不容易的一件事.
